Jacks Race Wrap – Bathurst 1000

The 2013 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 has been run and won, and it was a very busy weekend for me, competing in the Main Race co-driving with Scott McLaughlin and also in the Dunlop Series, driving the #54 Eggleston Motorsport Holden Commodore.

I’ll start with a run down of the Round 6 of the Dunlop V8Supercar Series. The weekend started exceptionally well for us in the #54 rocket, topping the time sheets in both of Friday’s Practice sessions. Qualifying Saturday morning we ended up third, however I was on two very fast laps and ran off the road twice trying to finish the laps off.

Starting the first race from third, I made a great start, nearly moving up to second on the opening lap. I was able to put some pressure on the Championship leader, Dale Wood, for most of the race, but passing him would prove very difficult, so I held stations in third place by the chequered flag.

Race two was held Saturday afternoon, and again starting from third, I dropped one position on the opening corner, before moving up to third before the end of the first lap. I didn’t quite have the speed of the front two, and I would again cross the finish line in third, which gave us third for the Round, and first Holden home. Also moving us into Fourth place in the Championship, which is great considering I didn’t compete at the opening round in Adelaide!!

I really need to thank our sponsors and supporters for making it possible to compete in the Dunlop Series Race, including, Eggleston Motorsport, JMC Group,, Hog’s Breath Cafe and Holden – Think Holden!

As I said earlier, it was a very busy weekend, jumping between the #54 Eggleston Motorsport car and the #33 Fujitsu Racing/GRM VF Holden Commodore. The first day, practice day, was a little challenging for us, however Scotty and the whole team did a great job. Friday morning I was 5th fastest amongst the Co-Drivers in the Co-Driver Practice session.

Scotty would qualify the car Friday afternoon, and the goal was to get into the Top 10 Shootout, which is a massive part of the Bathurst weekend. As the qualifying session went on, we had dropped down to 16th with 30 seconds to go, and Scott did a fantastic job on his last lap to improve his time by nearly half a second to jump into the top 10 in 9th position, as did our team mate, Alex Premat, who qualified 10th. A fantastic team effort to have both cars in the Top 10.

In the shootout Saturday afternoon, Scotty did a great lap, moving us up one spot, to start the main race in 8th place.

Sunday morning brings a traditional 20 minute warm up session, and the car felt great, and we finished the session in Position 1.

Scott would start the big race, and drove incredibly well to move us to 4th position. Unfortunately not long after our first pit stop for a driver change, a safety car was called for an accident and we got the raw end of the deal, losing about 10 positions on the track. We pressed on and got back into a solid top 10 position, even passing Paul Dumbrell in Car #1 at one stage. Scott jumped in for the final two stints and brought the car home in 8th place, a great effort, and our second Top 10 in as many races!

Everyone at Fujitsu Racing GRM did a fantastic job, the cars never missed a beat, and it was great to be a part of yet another Bathurst 1000.

Scott and I are now 6th in the Pirtek Endurance Cup Points, as we head to the Gold Coast 600 next week.

Before that, I have another endurance round in NZ with Greg Murphy this weekend, where hopefully we can maintain Murph’s Championship lead!!

That’s it for now, it’s a busy time of year, and loving every minute!!
