V8 racing veteran Cameron McConville has returned to racing in style with victory in Round 4 of the Kumho Tyres Australian V8 Touring Car Series today at Phillip Island.
Despite being out of a V8 since October 2012, McConville qualified second on Saturday before clinching victory in Race 1 later that afternoon.
Sunday he claimed victory in Race 2 and finished second to Eggleston Motorsport teammate Justin Ruggier in the final after ceding the lead on the final lap.
The result gave McConville the round victory over Ruggier, making it a 1-2 for EMS and the first round win for a Commodore driver in the series since Scott Loadsman at Wakefield Park in 2011.
The big news surrounding today’s racing though was series leader Ryan Simpson being barred from competing in the final race.
The Parramatta Smash Repairs driver, who was aiming for his seventh straight Kumho Series round win, was not permitted to start Race 3 due to excess noise.
Left in pit lane, Simpson could only watch as title rival Ruggier claimed victory and moved to within just three points of the Falcon driver with two rounds to go.
Simpson still leads the series with 498 points to Ruggier’s 495.
The next round of the Kumho Tyres Australian V8 Touring Car Series will be at Wakefield Park near Goulburn on October 18-19.
